2017 will bring with it many new and exciting opportunities for the Medford Public Schools. One of those opportunities will be a league change for Medford High School. According to Athletic Director Robert “Bob” Maloney; “for the past ten years, teams have left the Greater Boston League…first Revere and then Peabody, Arlington, Waltham and most recently, Cambridge. For the past five years, Medford, Everett, Malden and Somerville were all who remained and we have been looking for a league to call home.
The GBL athletic directors made presentations to the Middlesex League, the Northeast Conference and the Merrimack Valley League. The Northeast Conference welcomed us and the remaining GBL teams will merge with them beginning this Spring. The new Northeast Conference will feature (16) teams: Peabody, Beverly, Lynn Classical, Lynn English, Marblehead, Salem, Swampscott, Danvers, Revere, Winthrop, Gloucester, Saugus, Malden, Everett, Somerville and Medford.
For the first three years, the majority of the sports teams will play everyone in the league, meaning a schedule of (15) contests per sport. There will be a North NEC League, a South NEC League and a new League logo all of which are still in process. The football part of the league will be split into (3) tiers with Everett playing an independent schedule. But tradition will continue, as Medford will continue to play Everett, and play Malden on Thanksgiving Day. Medford looks forward to finally having a league to identify with. “We are pleased to be welcomed to the great Northeast Conference”, said Maloney.
