Last Thursday, McGlynn Teachers Anthony Petrelis, Dave Kuzmicz, and Ryan McCarthy, along with Medford High teacher Dave Richard, hosted many friends, fellow staff and families, to support the ” Buzz Off for Heemo”. Heemo was a student at the McGlynn School who passed away after a battle with cancer. Jackson Macaluso, a 2nd grader at the McGlynn is also participating as he’s done since he’s been in kindergarten. The Buzz Off is a fundraiser for One Mission, hosted by Gronk at Gillette Stadium in June. According to One Mission, it is a pediatric cancer charity that does whatever it takes to get kids through cancer. One Mission programs make living in the hospital less lonely and stressful, helps to bring back joy in a time of fear and uncertainty, and give kids and their loved ones the support they need to get through the emotional and financial challenges of treatment. All of the programs they fund, directly benefit children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer, the families who support them, and the medical community who compassionately cares for them. These programs and services rely exclusively on philanthropic support as they can not be reimbursed by insurance nor are they eligible for traditional grant funding.
Over 125 people attended the event at John Brewers Tavern in Malden, and over $7200 was raised. “We are so grateful to all who attended and supported this important cause. That amount currently puts us in first place overall as a team fundraising. We still have 6 weeks until we buzz and we are still continuing to look for businesses and others who may want to support us. The team who raises the most money gets to ride the Gronk Bus to and from the event”, said Petrelis. Interested parties who may want to make a donation can email Anthony at apetrelis@Medford.k12.ma.us
